We hear stories everyday of people who make outrageous amounts of money by selling exclusively online. So like the wise entrepreneur you are, you opened a page and were ready for customers to flood in. although sometimes we may be lucky in to get followers and a few sales here and there from family and friends. If you do not know what exactly you are doing it may get tricky. And especially now with covid we are being forced to adapt to new ways of marketing our produce and engaging with clients.
Now, just like the title suggests, this will be a very beginner friendly. Mostly suited to people farmers who are considering digital marketing or have just started and are still trying to figure things out. However, this shall become a series where we will keep getting deeper and deeper into using social media for marketing.
If you are trying to get some visibility to your brand
Participate in relevant conversations.
Now, there are hundreds of conversations out here that revolve around farming. So whether it is talks about input, policies, food security, or even exactly what you are growing in your farm. Do not be afraid to talk about your passion and what you do, the drive behind your brand etc. These conversations are a perfect way to get free visibility to your brand among like minded people who are likely to be direct consumers in the long run or send customers your way through recommendation.
Tip: when joining Facebook groups that deal with your interest, always join in as your page instead of your personal account for even better results.
Offer value added products.
Nobody hates free things. Especially if they truly add value. For a farm selling through social media this could range all the way from tutorials on how to store veggies the right way so that they do not go bad as quick, recipes of your most beloved produce, e-books and even discounts or gift cards that your customers can win/ buy for their friends and family.
Maximize on visuals.
They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, with shorter and shorter attention spans more people find it hard to go through text. Always make sure to take appealing photos from a good camera (your phone will also do) if you would like tips on how to take pictures of your produce leave a comment down below, we will do a follow up blog post.
If you need to convey longer messages, put in a video which by the way has been shown to outperform photos in terms of engagement.
Tip: short slide shows of pictures with music work great too and they are relatively easy to make.
Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other. If you are planning to be a leader in your market niche, you need to keep learning. This will help you from developing fresh content that will be useful to your audience, new ideas on how you can improve sales or better target your consumers and of course keep up with the trends. Because whether we like it or not, things change. And nothing will hurt your business more than remaining rigid in the changing tides.
Note: of course, this does not mean jumping into all the trends that come up but some are worth exploring. Learning of these tends will give you the choice to make the best decision best suited to your business.
Encourage customer feedback.
One of the reasons why social media marketing is so powerful ,is because it has broken down the communication barrier between the seller and consumer. In traditional forms of media, all sellers did was send out communication and the consumer received. However, it is now possible to know exactly how your customer feels about your produce. All you must do is encourage the culture of feedback with an open mind to improve their experience. After all, customer is king.
Update and re-share content that does well online.
Not all the content that you share will do well. However, there is some that will surpass your expectations. In this case, do not be afraid to update re-share your content making necessary adjustments to it while at it.
Call to action.
A picture of your latest produce from the farm is fine but for most people hey will just admire it and that is that. Let them know that you are selling. Ask them to buy. Let them know how they can make their orders etc. although one should be careful not to oversell with each post which could put off buyers, always make sure that when you are selling, you explicitly say so in your posts.
