Ever wondered how a certain farmer always manages to have almost a non-existent pest problem when you can barely catch your breath ? Well, the secret lies in small everyday tasks and believe it or not, it does not cost you anything extra. Wonderful, right ? Well without further ado, let us jump right in.
Your farm is dirty.
A clean farm does so much more than just look good. Dirt whether its from the debris of harvesting, or weeds that have been pulled or any other source, provide a breeding ground for pests. So it does not really matter how much pesticides you spray because young ones are being laid daily.
Also, some of this debris is probably diseased themselves and can affect the crops being grown.
You do not practice crop rotation
I do not want to say you deserve it, but honestly if you still do not practice crop rotation, you are literally calling the pest problem to yourself. Crop rotation not only lessens the need for chemical pest control, it has shown to be effective in reducing the spread of soil-borne disease. Bonus point, it avoids nutrient depletion in the soil. If you have been practicing crop rotation but still have a persistent pest problem, it could be possible you are just rotating the same family of crops.
You rely solely on pesticides
Now, don’t get us wrong. There is absolutely nothing wrong with pesticides. Especially when used correctly. And while we understand they seem like an easy fix, you cannot just rely on pesticides alone. This is why. Let us take an example of someone who has diabetes. While it is very important for them to take insulin, there are other lifestyle changes that need to be made. When it comes to pest control, some of these changes include : using traps, getting rid of breeding grounds, planting crops like cloves and marigold that repel them, introducing hosts that will feed on the pests etc. You can learn more about preventive measures by clicking here. There are so many tactics you could use. Be it biological or cultural. But always make sure you make a point to implement other measures to control pest populations.
You do not scout for pests
The earlier you notice pest populations, the better it is for you and your wallet. Scouting will help you detect early signs of pest and disease attack, nutritional requirements and enable you to make informed decisions. Did you know that pests are 50% more likely to attack stressed plants than healthier plants ? Well, now you know. So whether you choose to intensify your farm cleaning or, or opt for traps or planting crops that will repel the pests, remember pesticides are best used as a last approach for big populations of pests that actually affect the health of your crops.
Learn how you can also reduce cost of production through scouting by watching this 5 minute video on our YouTube channel.
You will be surprise how many mistakes are made when spraying pesticides. Are you using the right quantity of pesticide needed ? Not too little , not too much ? Are you completely drenching the crop? On both the top and bottom of foliage ? Are you using a sticker to help the pesticide stay on the leaves?
These may seem like insignificant, but play a huge role in the success of spraying.
You do not reading the label
One of the biggest mistake that farmers face is that they do not read the label of pesticides. Is what you are using actually effective against red spider mites? What is the correct dosage ? There is so much crucial information on labels that you can only get from actually reading the label.
